This article deals with the issue of public security and violent crime in Brazil. The search for alternatives to the issue deserves to be discussed constantly, in view of its complexity. The work aims to debate the creation of Criminal Police in Brazil and possible effects on public security and was produced through theoretical research, survey and analysis of available official data. In this regard, initially some considerations are presented about the importance of the police as a state public security institution; discussed some basic assumptions that have justified the process of creation and effectiveness of the Criminal Police in Brazil and, later, it discusses the possibilities of strengthening the State in public security with effectiveness of the Criminal Police in Brazil, including, in the issue related to coping to criminal factions. In view of the researched scenario, it is clear the situation of violent crime that affects the country and the importance of the effectiveness of the Criminal Police as a fundamental instrument for the expansion of the State in guaranteeing public security.
