Abstract

Rebellions in Brazilian prison system have brought negative international repercussions for Brazil. These events may be indicative that current penal policies need to be reassessed. The crisis of this system possibly has its cause in different aspects of society. The apparent disregard for the population deprived of liberty and the violation of basic rights seems to aggravate this scenario. In any case, there is an effort to provide assistance to prisoners, through policies that encourage the provision of education, work and health in prison units. The increase in the offer of this assistance seems to prevent conflicts by having a more active presence of the State. However, through a quantitative exploratory research, it was verified that the offer of such assistance, apparently, is not enough to cause a significant impact in the reduction of crisis situations and internal acts of violence.
