This article will discuss respondents' perceptions of the country's prison system. We present the results of the research entitled “Social Perceptions about the Brazilian Prison System”, conducted in the second half of 2018 by the Center for Crime Studies and Public Security of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (CRISP / UFMG). As a rule, research in other contexts relates to the public's lack of familiarity with the functioning of the prison system. This study aims to fill this gap in Brazil.
There is congruence with the problems that are most central to the system. Overcrowding and unhealthiness become synonymous with the system. The perception of public opinion seems to reflect this perception of system degradation. On the other hand, awareness that it is a dysfunctional and unstructured system is common to system professionals as well as the public. In general, as respondents to surveys in the Metropolitan Regions, they tend to be less punitive to system operators, judged by the conversion process against harsher penalties such as death or life imprisonment.
